Wind Power
America’s Wind Power Port

The winds of change have created a growth opportunity for the Port of Corpus Christi.  Wind power production has become the greatest growth segment of the electricity marketing in the country.  Texas, now the no. 1 wind energy production state in the nation is establishing renewable electricity standards that are driving increased demand for wind turbines.  Federal production tax credits for wind projects have created a favorable investment climate for large wind farm developments like the Papalote Creek project in neighboring San Patricio County.  E.On Climate & Renewable is developing the Papalote Creek wind farm with an expected installation of 109 complete turbines, all of which are moving through the Port of Corpus Christi.

Large public wharves; spacious, well-lighted, paved, open storage areas; and Foreign Trade Zone benefits make the Port attractive to turbine importers.  Excellent transportation links with nearby I-37 and rail capability at each storage facility speed the clearance of components to project sites.  Cargo discharged on the northside of the Inner Harbor provides easy, convenient access to the Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor facilitating excellent connectivity to I-37.  These strengths along with our competitive pricing and superior customer service have attracted a steady stream of shippers to the port related to wind turbine activity.  The Port of Corpus Christ is currently facilitating the movement of the most wind turbine manufacturers than any other Texas port.  Presently, we are moving Siemens, Vestas, GE, CS Wind, Dongkuk, Clipper and will be welcoming Spanish manufacturer Gamesa this month.

Not content to serve only as a shipping hub for wind turbines, the Port is also looking at the potential of harnessing South Texas winds at Port owned sites to generate clean electrical power for the local community.  Revolution Energy is developing the Harbor Sunrise wind farm on the northside of the Inner Harbor along Nueces Bay.  When completed, the site will hold up to 20 wind turbines with a projected investment of approximately $65 million and all components moving through the Port.   A new national blade testing facility being developed on Corpus Christi Bay will also boost the area’s image as a key wind energy center.  These developments will allow the Port to continue to be an influential participant in the future of clean energy solutions for South Texas and the nation.
