Port
of Corpus Christi Cold Storage Receives Cold Treatment Certification
The Port of Corpus Christi recently received news from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) certifying the Port for cold
treatment of imported fruit upon arrival. This certification makes
the Port of Corpus Christi the southernmost port in the United
States with the ability to handle imported fruits that may require
cold treatment as a protection mechanism against bringing fruit
flies and other pests into the United States.
"
This certification demonstrates the Port of Corpus Christi's strong
commitment in working with USDA to protect South Texas agriculture.
Corpus Christi is the only port in Texas with this certification.
This certification is a beneficial addition to the Port of Corpus
Christi cold storage because while no cold treatment is ever anticipated
it does give Corpus Christi the authorization to perform it should
the service be needed," said Jerry Cotter, Director of Operations
for the Port of Corpus Christi. " Without the certification,
Corpus Christi would still be able to handle imported fruits.
The certification is in essence, a safety net."
Since
its opening in 2000, the Port of Corpus Christi Cold Storage has
handled shipments of imported apples from New Zealand. The Port
continues to focus on fruit import markets from Africa, Mexico,
Central and South America.
