Corpus
Christi Cold Storage Receives Poultry Export Certification
As
of November 2, 2001, the Corpus Christi Cold Storage is authorized
by the United States Department of Agriculture- Food Safety and
Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) to handle poultry exports destined
for Russia. According to Ed Altemus, Port of Corpus Christi Trade
Development Director, " This certification creates another
market opportunity for Corpus Christi. Our facility, the newest
on the Gulf of Mexico, was designed with poultry exports in mind.
In addition to our freezer storage capabilities, the Corpus Christi
Cold Storage features a re-pack room and blast freeze capabilities
of 288,000 lbs per 48 hours. It's an ideal place to handle poultry
exports."
With only one year in business, the Corpus Christi Cold Storage
(now fully operated and managed by the Port of Corpus Christi
Authority), has developed a solid foundation of business in providing
services for a local meat processor, storage for statewide grocery
chain, storage for Northwestern based French fry producer, repacking
hams, and receiving meat and apple imports from New Zealand. Most
recently, the port began storing locally harvested frozen shrimp.
"
I expect 2002 to be even better. We have some new services in
the works with new markets. Corpus Christi's distinct advantages
of faster transit times to key markets and significant cost savings
are strong factors in our ability to pursue and attract new business,"
added Altemus.
