GET
IT THERE COLD AND FAST with the Port of Corpus Christi Cold Storage
The
Port of Corpus Christi Cold Storage's motto " Get it There
Cold and Fast" with the " Texas Two Step" (from
ship to warehouse in 60 seconds) continues to be the case. Since,
as of October 1, 2001, the Port of Corpus Christi Authority took
over all operations, sales, and management of the cold storage
from Berkshire Foods.
" We're open for business. It's been a seamless transition
with business as usual. Our business and service is even going
to get better. If anything, the Port's management serves our current
and future customers by creating a direct responsive and cooperative
link for business," said Ed Altemus, Port of Corpus Christi
Director of Trade Development.
"Altemus
has been involved with the cold storage project from day one.
Over the last year, he has primarily focused on developing business
for the cold storage; therefore, he has great knowledge of the
import/ export markets that the cold storage is presently serving,
as well as, the markets we know we can serve," said Robert
Jacobi, Port of Corpus Christi Deputy Director. "Chuck Margraf,
Operations Manager and Gary Homes, Plant Engineer both continue
to ensure the smooth operations of our 100,000 sq. foot facility
with the same dedicated employees."
While current business continues, over the last month, business
has increased and new markets have opened up according to Altemus.
The Port is now handling farm-raised frozen shrimp for RNG/ Lighthouse
Seafood Company in Palacios, Texas. Also, the Port recently received
designation as an approved cold storage for Poultry exports to
Russia.
"
These are just a few things that illustrate the potential and
capabilities of the cold storage. While other projects remain
in the works, our current business partners are committed to working
with us and have even expanded their use of the facility,"
said Altemus.
Over
the last year, the Port of Corpus Christi Cold Storage has handled
meat and apple imports from New Zealand as well as frozen food
exports to Mexico. Also, the cold storage has stored turkeys and
bread products for a local grocer. Kyokuyo Shipping has three
upcoming scheduled discharges on December 17, January 4 and 17.
The Port of Corpus Christi Cold Storage features 100, 000 sq feet
( 9290 sq. meters) and an on-dock location. The ship dock is less
than 60 ft ( 10meters) from the warehouse and is served the by
the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Texas-Mexican
Railway. Certifications include: USDA approved for export and
ID service, approved for import inspection, USDA-MID certification
rooms, approved for storage and delivery on Chicago Mercantile
Exchange, and Customs Bonded.
